In terms of architectural interest for the money, you’re not going to do much better than Lawsonia. It’s full of the exaggerated and unnatural angles and slopes beloved by fans of the golden age of golf course architecture. It’s a strategic and superbly fun – the sort of place that appeals to both your heart and your brain. There are precious few courses like this in the world, and almost every other one is supremely private. And yet, the most exclusive thing about Lawsonia is its somewhat out-of-the-way location. This is a can’t miss destination for anybody who loves interesting and unique golf.
Expert Reviews
It’s hard for the general public to play the crown jewels of one of America’s Golden Age architects. Most people – even golf fanatics – aren’t going to Alister MacKenzie‘s Cypress Point, C.B. Macdonald‘s National Golf Links of America, A.W. Tillinghast‘s Winged Foot or William Flynn‘s Shinnecock Hills. There is, however, one accessible, brilliant, fun, public option any golfer can go play for less than $100: Lawsonia Links in Green Lake, Wisconsin.
The Fried EggThe Links course at Lawsonia is one of the best values in the country and an architectural treasure. The par fives feature incredible variety in their shape and terrain which in turn creates excellent memorability. The conditioning is spot on and then open design provides enticing vistas across the course. Simply put, this is one of the most underrated courses in the country. … it absolutely deserves even greater recognition and is a must-play for anyone that appreciates golf course architecture.
