Royal Aberdeen Golf Club

Aberdeen, Scotland

One of golf’s greatest front nines lies among these dunes along the north sea

Golf is full of great stretches of holes — Amen Corner, the finish at Pebble Beach — and the front nine at Royal Aberdeen is as good as any of them. There is near complete agreement that the first half at Royal Aberdeen is exceeded nowhere in golf. And these dune-lined holes along the North Sea are as challenging as they are spectacular. Which is to say, very. While the back nine cannot match the perfection of the first, don’t sleep on these holes. They occupy higher, less dramatic ground, but with better views the overall experience is no less rewarding. This is one of the great links courses of the world.

When to Play
Royal Aberdeen is open year around. The east coast of Scotland (where Royal Aberdeen is located) is generally drier but also slightly cooler than the west coast.

Late spring and summer is your best bet for comfortable temperatures, plenty of sunlight, and minimal wind, but good weather can be found April through October.

Royal Aberdeen requires a valid handicap certificate (24 or better for men and women) and a letter of introduction from “an accredited golf club.” For what it’s worth, there aren’t many (if any) reports of these documents being checked, but you may want to be safe and have them on hand.
