Gullane Golf Club, No. 1

Gullane, Scotland

A memorable mix of challenge, atmosphere and fun

Compared to the other great links courses, Gullane No. 1 files a bit under the radar. Perhaps Gullane don’t lend itself as easily to the reductive characterization that makes it easy to explain the appeal of other nearby courses, such as Murifield and North Berwick. But don’t pass up Gullane. The town the course begins and ends in is surpassed by none – St. Andrews included – for a delightfully pervasive golf-obsessed vibe. A bit unusual for a links, Gullane No. 1 climbs up, over and around a hill that provides one of the best panoramic views in golf. And the course itself is a straight-up championship level challenge with great hole after great hole. This is one of the best all-around experiences in Scotland, and in golf.

When to Play

Gullane No. 1 is open year around. The east coast of Scotland (where Gullane is located) is generally drier but also slightly cooler than the west coast.

Late spring and summer is your best bet for comfortable temperatures, plenty of sunlight, and minimal wind, but good weather can be found April through October.
