A low-key modern links evolving into something great

Time and maturity have elevated many courses, yet not every course has had the benefit of a century of existence. What to make then of those courses that are on-their-way-to-great, but aren’t quite there yet? Seapoint is not one of the great old links of Ireland, as it only dates back to the early 1990s. But give few more decades and that appraisal will change. A genuine links course with a quick taste of parkland in the early holes (trees! water! oh my!), Seapoint is a course that builds towards a rewarding finish in the dunes. And, like so many great Irish links, it’s a challenging and potentially punishing course. It may not be a great course (yet) but it’s a great course to play when you’re playing around eastern Ireland. And maybe eventually it’ll become a destination in its own right.
Expert Reviews
Seapoint starts slowly, playing across level terrain with an almost parkland feel. It is links land but it is tame. It does, however, introduce you to the shape of the green complexes, the quality of the surfaces and the dangers of the bunkering. Gorse lingers constantly, defining holes, and it becomes ever more apparent as the back nine picks up the pace and finds its true links calling. This is the real test, with bigger shapes, fall-offs, deep bunkering, dense rough and tough approaches.
