Cork Golf Club

Cork, Ireland

A splendid (and affordable) Alister MacKensie gem in Southern Ireland

Perhaps you’ve heard of Alister MacKenzie. Legendary architect, designer of Augusta, Cypress Hill and Royal Melbourne’s West Course; all three are without doubt three of the top 10 golf courses. And those are just his three best; he also designed acclaimed courses like Alwoodley, Lahinch, and Pasatiempo among others. But trying to actually play a MacKenzie course is another thing. In America, Pasatiempo (with its $300 greens fees) and the seen-better-days muni Sharp Park, both in California, are your options. The UK and Ireland has some better options, one of the most intriguing of which is Cork Golf Club. It’s a parkland course build around an old quarry next to an sea inlet. It’s not seaside, but it feels like it at times. It’s a splendid and beautiful little course that’s considerably more affordable than most Irish options. There’s hardly a more attractive and enjoyable round on a Mackenzie course to be found anywhere else in the world.
