A crap course played through stunning dunes would still be a pretty great experience. But a brilliant course through some of the most epic dunes in golf? That’s something special. And that’s what Carne is. Special.

Y es, Royal Dornoch, The Old Course, Royal County Down, Lahinch, Tralee, Enniscrone, Sunningdale Old, and Ballybunion Old are all great, but my heart yearns to return to the rustic Carne Golf Links of Belmullet, Ireland, perhaps the least known and played of the great courses.

Located on the north portion of Ireland’s western coast affectionately known as the Wild Atlantic Way, Carne enjoys one of the most extreme landscapes you’ll find on a golf course that still encourages players to walk… The choppy landscape seems to mimic the waves of the nearby sea and results in uneven lies, occasional blind shots, and very memorable terrain. You cannot help but smile when here. No bigger dunes, no bigger thrills at this 27-hole venue, tucked away in the wilds of Mayo. A remote, majestic links where recent new holes have seen it get even better…. Carne requires more brains than brawn. You’ll recognise this standing on any of the tees. Ultimately Carne is a masterpiece of links golf. The colossal dunes not only frame the holes but they also interact with the golf. It may not be to everyone’s taste but it’s easy to see why so many people fall in love with it.

From this point Carne feels like pure fantasy, the remaining holes set among sand formations so high they seem to stretch into the clouds and dwarf the golf fields beneath them. In truth Hackett barely designed this part of the course, instead he let the land dictate play and merely uncovered playing corridors and green sites created by centuries of whipping winds and receding seas. The Carne links…sits in splendid isolation on the Atlantic edge of County Mayo. It lies on a peninsula, amidst gigantic dunes with far-reaching views across Blacksod Bay to the Atlantic islands of Inis Gloire and Inis Geidhewild. And it’s absolutely charming. Top 100 Golf Courses

April through July are the driest months, while the warmest temperatures can be found May through October. May through September is a fine time to play, with May-July being your best bet.
